The Departments, Research and faculty |
The Medical School is divided
into 42 departments, 18 of which are concerned with the basic
sciences and pre-clinical medicine. (They are the Departments of
Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Behavioral Sciences,
Biochemistry, Biology, Biophysics, Central Research Laboratory,
Chemistry, Clinical Chemistry, Experimental Surgery, Forensic
Medicine, Immunology, Kinesiology, Microbiology, Pathology,
Path-physiology, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Public Health and
Epidemiology. The clinical departments focus on the areas of
diseases and maternity care. Included are the Departments of
Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy, Dentistry and Oral
Surgery, Dermatology, Family Medicine, Heart Institute,
Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine (2 clinics), Medical
Genetics, Nephrology Centre, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics
and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics,
Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Medical
Psychology, Pulmonology, Radiology, Surgery (2 clinics),
Traumatology, and Urology.)
There are also several sub-departments and sections that
contribute to the research and teaching activities. All the
laboratories are well equipped according to the highest
European standards.
Research is accorded high importance at the University.
There are over 60 ongoing research projects supported by the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the National Research Foundation,
and the Hungarian Ministry of Welfare. Additional grants come
from local pharmaceutical companies and various industrial
firms.The variety of programs and specializations offers students the
full spectrum of specialties. The Student Researchers' Society
is a programme operating in each of the departments of the
Medical School. The students enrolled in these programs are
provided with the opportunity to review the basic sciences, take
part in clinical work, engage in laboratory work, and get a
solid foundation for postgraduate researches.Along with each individual's full-time commitment to clinical
service, the staff members of the Medical School, numbering well
over 500 physicians, participate in the teaching and research
programs, as well. This internationally recognized faculty hosts
172 physicians holding a Ph.D. degree. Thirty-six faculty
members also hold the Hungarian degree of Doctor of Sciences
(D.Sc.). Two seniors hold membership in the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences. |
